A Month After Arrival

Having arrived in Taiwan a month ago by now, and having started classes since two weeks ago, I'd like to give a small update.

I was placed at level 4 at Wenzao, which constitutes the last part of book 2 of Modern Chinese 時代華語. At first I felt that this level was too low for me, as all the content that the book goes through are things I've already studied. The last part of book 2 (but in the A Course in Contemporary Chinese book series) was roughly where I left it after leaving Taiwan last time. Due to this I applied to skip a level.

The skip level test tested all areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. To pass you need 80%. I got 57%, mainly due to the writing part as well as the fact that I also failed multiple of the listening parts. I definitely thought my listening was better than the result I got on the test, but unfortunately the listening test format is the same as TOCFL: you hear a conversation once, and immediately have to write the correct choice.

Either way, having attended the classes for a month, even though I feel like the content is a bit too basic for me, my listening and speaking abilities are improving a lot. I have one teacher for 3 days of the week and a second teacher for the remaining 2 days of the week and I'd say that both of them are good. Both are good at going on tangents and venturing outside of course content, especially if questions are asked. As I feel that the coursebook content isn't too interesting, I'd say that these are the interesting part of the classes.

In the end, I feel cautiously optimistic for my future studies even though I'm going to try and skip ahead the next term.
